Tips for How to Stop a Barking Dog

While dogs are some of the most loving animals on the planet, there is one trait, which probably drives people insane about them: the barking. In many cases, dogs seem to bark incessantly without reason and seemingly nothing can make them stop. While it is true that barking is their only way of expressing themselves, it is necessary to learn how to stop a barking dog because after all, if you don't deserve some peace and quiet, at least your neighbors do. In any case, here are a few tips for how to stop a barking dog, although keep in mind that there are more out there and looking into them will only be beneficial.

To start things off, it is necessary to understand the most common reason for dogs barking without reason: being alone. Unfortunately, most dogs are a little overly attached to their masters to the point where being left alone can not only put them in a state of complete boredom but it can also cause them to feel nervous and anxious. In other words, they have separation anxiety and simply taking them out to walks more often will tire them out, hopefully causing them to fall asleep whether or not you are here.

If you are a busy owner and simply do not have enough time to spend it with your dog, then you should definitely consider investing in some puzzle toys, such as hollowed-out bones with peanut butter inside or special, long-lasting biscuits. These toys will not only keep your dog entertained for hours on end, but they will also sate their appetite. This is really a perfect solution if you tend to spend most of your time outside of the home.

If your dog isn't barking out of boredom, but rather because he or she is being frightened by something, then one of the best ways to go about it would be to expose them and desensitize them to their fears. For example, my dog was afraid of open umbrellas for some reason to the point of fleeing them at sight. However, as we kept an open umbrella in the living room at all times our dog became more and more indifferent towards it and stopped paying attention to it at all. In other words, you need to make your dog understand that whatever is exciting them is in reality, nothing to write home about, and the best way to do it would be simple exposure.

Finally, I would like to finish off by leaving you with this tip: do not scream at your dog or reprimand them severely, especially with physical violence. Not only does this tend to make matters worse, but it will also leave a permanent mark on your dog's psyche, which would be quite shameful considering the problem can be solved in a much less harmful way you only need a bit of patience and resolve. While these tips for how to stop a barking dog should be enough, it is possible they will fail, at which point it is recommended that you either look for more solutions or consult an expert on dog behavior.
