How to Stop Your Neighbor's Barking Dog

It seems that every neighborhood, whether it is an apartment complex or street, has one or more dogs that do not know when to stop barking. If you live close to someone that has a dog that barks incessantly, you know how annoying it can be. If the dog likes to bark in the middle of the night, it can even interfere with your sleeping habits. If you are in this situation, you may need some advice on how to stop neighbor's barking dogs.

Your Options:

When trying to determine the best way to stop neighbor's barking dogs you have several different options. The one that suits your situation the best will depend on several factors.

The first factor will depend on your living situation, apartment complex, suburb, street, or rural setting.

The next factor will be your relationship with your neighbor. Are you friend's? Are you just acquaintances? Or is there animosity in the relationship? If there is animosity in the relationship, it can narrow your options some.

The next factor will be your neighbor's attitude about their dog. Many dog owners believe that their dog can do no wrong. If your neighbor has this attitude, then this will also narrow your possible choices.

Different methods of approaching the problem.

Once you have taken the above scenarios into consideration, you will be better equipped to choose the option that suits your situation the best.

If you have a good relationship with your neighbor, and you believe they are open to a conversation about their dog you have many different options available.

1. You can go to your neighbor and discuss the problem with them, and offer them some solutions to the problem. You could ask them to give the dog some training or to take the dog to a specialist for training. You could also suggest that the dog could be outfitted with an anti-bark collar. One of the ones that use either citronella as a deterrent or an audio deterrent would be the best suggestions. Most dog owners will not agree to using a shock collar.

2. If your relationship with your neighbor is not that good, or if you want to avoid a confrontation you still have options.

In this situation, your best option it to purchase one of the remote anti-barking units that are on the market. These devices work by emitting an audible sound that can only be heard by the dog when they start barking. When the dog hears the sound they will stop barking. The main drawback to this type of device is their range. If the dog that is bothering you lives several houses away, the device may not have enough range to be an effective deterrent. In apartment complexes, many people use these devices with great results. There is one other drawback to consider, if used continuously, some dogs will build a tolerance to the sound and continue to bark anyway. For this reason, you do not want to plug the unit in and leave it on all of the time. Just plug it in when the dog is barking a lot or when it is time for you to go to bed.

3. As a last resort you can always involve the police in the situation. This should be used as a last resort, to stop your neighbor's barking dogs. When you involve the police, it will usually end in animosity between you and your neighbor.
